Toward the bottom of this page is series of steps for installing Tweak UI the correct way. You'll also learn how to uninstall it and where to download it, or in short, everything you need to know to work with Microsoft's free but unsupported Windows customization tool.

Finding the right version of Tweak UI for your particular version of Windows and Internet Explorer has become easier over the years.

Tweak UI 2.10 for XP: The Windows XP version of Tweak UI (and, in fact, all the PowerToys), was released in the fourth quarter of 2001, but was then summarily yanked off the Web and re-released on April 23, 2002. This 2.x version of Tweak UI is for Windows XP only. It has gone almost completely unchanged for three years. It's freely downloadable from the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP website. You'll find several other useful PowerToys along with Tweak UI there.

If you're running Windows XP, you don't need the step-by-step tips that follow. Just visit the link above for Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP, then scroll down and in the pale blue box on the right side of the page, find and click the TweakUI.exe link.

Tweak UI 1.33 for All Earlier Versions of Windows: In 2000, Microsoft released a one-size-fits-all version, Tweak UI 1.33 (also known as "Tweak UI 2000"), that works with Windows 95, NT 4.0, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows Me. In short, everything but Windows XP.

To download the Tweak UI 1.33, please visit the Microsoft Tweak UI 1.33 Web page. For versions of the PowerToys for Windows versions prior to Windows XP, scroll to the bottom of this page.

Be aware that all versions of Tweak UI are wholly unsupported by Microsoft.

Be sure to uninstall any previous version of Tweak UI before installing a newer one (Check Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs). If that doesn't work for you, see Uninstalling Tweak UI 1.33.

Use these steps to avoid nagging Tweak UI 1.33 installation problems:

The downloaded Tweak UI 1.33 arrives in a 111K self-extracting ZIP archive file named TWEAKUI.EXE. You'll need to extract it to C:\Downloads\Tweak UI 1.33 or another suitable folder. You can double-click the file and type the pathname, or if you have a ZIP utility (such as Nico Mak's WinZip) installed, you may have a right-click menu option for extraction, as shown in the picture. The extraction process will create a new folder called "TweakUI" in the target folder. Open that new TweakUI folder, and proceed to the next step.

Click Browse This CD

Right-click the TWEAKUI.INF file and choose "Install" from the pop-up menu to begin Tweak UI's installation. You may be confronted with an error message, such as "The File 'TWEAKUI.CNT' was not found. If so, simply click the Browse button and redirect the dialog box right back to the same folder (possibly C:\Downloads\Tweak UI 1.33\TweakUI) in which you began the installation. Click OK, and proceed to Step 3.

Right-click the TWEAKUI.INF file and choose Install.
